Sugar Glider Safe Cages

Learn how to choose a cage with appropriate space, safe bar spacing, durable materials, secure doors, and room for climbing.

Choosing the Right Size

A sugar glider cage should be as large as you can reasonably accommodate. For two sugar gliders, the cage should be no smaller than 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 36 inches high. This provides approximately 12 cubic feet of interior space.

The minimum size should be treated as a starting point rather than the ideal. Larger and taller cages provide more room for climbing, jumping, exercise, sleeping areas, feeding stations, and enrichment.

When housing more than two sugar gliders, add at least 2 cubic feet of cage space for each additional glider above the minimum cage size. For example, a cage housing three gliders should provide at least 14 cubic feet, while a cage housing four gliders should provide at least 16 cubic feet.

Interior space must also remain usable. A cage filled too tightly with toys, branches, pouches, and feeding equipment may provide less practical movement space than its measurements suggest.

Preventing Escapes and Injuries

Cage bar spacing should be no more than 1/2 inch. Sugar gliders can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, so inspect more than the regular cage bars.

Check the doors, feeding doors, corners, seams, wall connections, bottom grate, and the area surrounding the waste tray. Any gap larger than 1/2 inch may create an escape or entrapment risk.

Horizontal bars make climbing easier. A cage with more horizontal bars is generally easier for sugar gliders to navigate than one made primarily with vertical bars. Rectangular openings measuring approximately 1/2 inch by 1 inch are commonly preferred because they provide safe spacing and useful climbing surfaces.

Do not use metal window screening, chicken wire, or fine wire mesh for cage walls. Sugar glider nails, toes, feet, or tails can become caught in small or irregular openings.

Safe Cage Construction

Metal cages are generally preferred because they do not absorb urine and odors and are easier to clean than wood or other porous materials.

Choose a cage with a smooth, durable, animal-safe finish. Powder-coated or enamel-coated wire is generally preferred because the coating helps protect the metal from rust and creates a surface that is easier to clean.

Inspect the cage regularly for rust, peeling or bubbling coatings, exposed metal, broken welds, loose wire, sharp edges, and damaged hardware. A cage should be repaired safely or replaced when damage creates an injury or chewing risk.

Avoid galvanized wire. Galvanized metal has a zinc-containing coating that may create an unnecessary exposure risk, particularly if the wire is chewed, damaged, or corroded.

PVC- or vinyl-coated wire should also be approached cautiously. Do not use a coated cage when the coating is damaged, peeling, or of unknown composition.

Why Wood Is Not Recommended

Wood should not be used as the primary cage material. Sugar gliders may chew it, and unfinished wood absorbs urine, moisture, food residue, and odors. Once contaminated, wood can be difficult to clean and disinfect thoroughly.

Paints, stains, preservatives, sealants, glues, and other wood treatments may also be hazardous if they are chewed. Even products labeled non-toxic may not be intended for repeated chewing or long-term animal exposure.

Safe untreated branches may still be used inside the cage for climbing and enrichment. They should come from a sugar-glider-safe tree, be prepared appropriately, and be replaced when they become heavily soiled, cracked, splintered, or difficult to clean.

Secure Openings and Latches

Cage doors should close securely and remain closed when the cage is climbed on or shaken. Sugar gliders are curious, persistent animals and may learn to open simple sliding doors or loosely fastened feeding doors.

Use a glider-safe secondary clip when a latch can be pushed, lifted, or slid open. Check that clips, hooks, chains, zip ties, and other hardware do not have sharp ends, tight loops, or openings that could catch a nail, toe, foot, tail, or limb.

Doors should also be large enough to allow safe access for cleaning, removing accessories, and reaching a sugar glider when necessary. Small access doors can make routine care difficult and may encourage unsafe reaching or grabbing.

Safe Cage Checklist

  • At least 24 x 24 x 36 inches for two sugar gliders.
  • At least 2 additional cubic feet for every glider beyond the first two.
  • Bar spacing no wider than 1/2 inch.
  • More horizontal bars to support easier climbing.
  • Powder-coated or enamel-coated metal in good condition.
  • No rust, peeling coating, broken welds, or sharp edges.
  • No metal screening, chicken wire, or fine wire mesh.
  • No gaps larger than 1/2 inch around doors, corners, or trays.
  • Secure doors and latches that gliders cannot open.
  • Enough open interior space for movement after accessories are added.
